30% of Flemish people do not live a happy life
3 out of 10 Flemish people are unhappy and 1 out of 4 Flemish people have even considered suicide. Leo Bormans, an expert on happiness, gave his thoughts on the matter by saying that these statistics are not uncommon, yet they're still disturbing. "This study concerns our satisfaction about life in general. Therefore it is disturbing to conclude that the amount of people who do not feel good about themselves is that high. Loneliness plays a major role in this."
"It is not just the elderly who are lonely, young people are, too" - Leo Bormans, expert on happiness
Research shows that 1 out of 4 Flemish people face a frequent feeling of loneliness. "It is not just the elderly who are lonely, young people are, too", says Bormans. "The youth usually have many friends on Facebook, and may not be lonely from a social point of view, but they are from an emotional perspective. They do not really know who they could turn to when they are going through a rough time." This is why Borman believes that loneliness is the biggest problem for the future. "Happiness and loneliness are two closely related factors," he said.
Vitality is essential
Flemish people highlight wellbeing, love and nature as the most meaningful elements in life. They also agreed that social aspects are equally as important, especially spending time with relatives.
Adversely, they felt that culture and patriarchy were less important, with 1 out of 4 Flemish people stating that culture adds meaning to their live.
YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH
What does it mean to be happy? Lieve Plasch, a psychologist, gives her opinion:
- I believe that a healthy person is a happy person.
- Healthy and happy people are charismatic and have a lot of energy, but are also good and simple people - people who listen to their heart and add meaning to the many aspects of life (family, friends, sports, work, society, nature, animals etc.).
- By improving our health, we bring out the best in ourselves.
- In turn, we will experience more joy and live a more grateful life.
- You deserve to be happy and healthy!
